A cocktail of excitement, stress, tiredness and alcohol can create unexpected hazards in the home at Christmas.

  • 31 people have died since 1996 from watering the Christmas tree while the fairy lights are still plugged-in
  • 19 people have died in the last 3 years by eating Christmas decorations they believed were chocolate
  • Hospitals reported 4 broken arms last year after cracker pulling incidents
  • 101 people since 1997 have had to have broken parts of plastic toys pulled out of the soles of their feet
  • 3 people die each year testing if a 9V battery works on their tongue
  • 58 people are injured each year by using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers
  • 142 individuals were injured in 1998 from trying on a brand new shirt & not taking out the pins first
  • Males were 40% more likely than females to be injured in falls.
  • 71% of people over the age of 50 are injured due to opening supermarket packaging
  • 543 individuals were admitted to casualty departments in the last 2 years from attempting to open beer bottles with their teeth or eye socket
  • 18 people were seriously burned in 1988 from putting on jumpers while having a lit cigarette in their mouth
  • 5 people were injured in 2006 in accidents involving out of control
    Scalextric cars.
  • 5 people suffer third degree burns while setting fire to the Christmas pudding.
  • 300 people need emergency dental treatment after cracking teeth while eating nuts.
  • In 2000, a total of 8 people cracked their skull whilst throwing up into the toilet!
